French Malbec is a very successful grape: its strong but subtle taste, its ageing potential and its adaptability to a lot of climates make it a very much sought-after varietal. Israel just relased a 100% Malbec wine, Terra 2007 Malbec from the Teperberg Winery.
The Teperberg winery is the oldest one in Israel, being founded in 1870. It produced only sacramental wines for decades until the 1990s. In 2002, the California trained winemaker Shiki Rauchberger launched his "Series" collection of wines designed to appeal to more sophisticated wine drinkers. The fact that Rauchberger chose the Malbec as the varietal for his new release is the sign showing a growing interest in the qualities of the grape. The wine should be available for international markets within a few months.
