The Cahors Malbecs are widely available in Canada but rather rare on the US market. That's why the Cahors vintners decided to go West and live the American dream. Of course, their decision was based on statistics and market studies. First, a study showed the wide interest of the American wine consumer for the Malbec varietal. Of course, the Argentinian Malbec is better implanted and famous than the Cahors Malbec. But as history keeps reminding us, there wouldn't be any malbec in Argentina if not for the French Malbec. The Americans need to be exposed to Cahors, the original Malbec and discover its smoothness, richness and large range of prices and styles.
Second, the few Cahors Malbecs available on the American market are very successful. Dominique Ressès, of Château La Caminade, says that its La Commandery wine represent 24% of its sales.
Last but not least, the American wine consumption keeps growing in volume. It happens that the Cahors Malbecs have a very good price point for its quality: usually a bottle of Cahors overdelivers in quality in comparison with other Malbecs.
Are the Cahors producers optimistic? Of course! About 20 of them plan to come back to New York in September to present their wines to the American press, trade and consumers. See you soon in New York!
